Internet connectivity disrupted
  • Monitoring
    UTC
    Monitoring

We observe that internet connectivity appears to be working again at the moment, though we have had no information yet from UIS so cannot guarantee that this will remain the case. The advice to work from home tomorrow still stands for now.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

The Departmental Silver Team has decided to recommend that you work from home tomorrow if you can.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

Partial connectivity (about 40%) has been restored as of 15:26.

This remains a University-wide problem but we have had no information from UIS yet.

If connecting from the internet into our network, only about 40% of our servers will be reachable. If you are unable to connect directly to the system you need, try going via CL VPN1, CL VPN2 or the UIS VPN. If connecting via SSH, you could try connecting via slogin or some other departmental server such as ely.

Internet connectivity in William Gates Building offices, as well as the rest of the University including eduroam, other departments and colleges, is likely to be barely usable.

Our main departmental website www.cst.cam.ac.uk remains accessible from the internet as it is hosted outside the University; however pages on www.cl.cam.ac.uk are affected.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

We observe that the University is now completely offline. This situation is beyond our control and we await UIS to repair the fault.

  • Identified
    UTC
    Identified

We are aware that certain hosts within our network are unable to reach certain hosts on the internet.

(Specifically, any given IP address on our network is unable to reach a different seemingly-random 15% of internet IP addresses.)

We believe that this may be due to a malfunction or misconfiguration of the University firewall and have contacted the team in UIS responsible for this.

Wifi unavailable in the William Gates Building
  • Resolved
    UTC
    Resolved

We believe that (with the exception of the Robotics-CL and govroam networks, as previously mentioned) the wifi service has been fully restored. Please contact service-desk@cst.cam.ac.uk if you are still experiencing any issues. We regret the unexpected disruption.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

Fixing the UniOfCam-Guest network will require us to withdraw the Robotics-CL and govroam networks which we believe not to be in use currently. The new software platform for our wifi infrastructure is unexpectedly limited to 6 networks (SSIDs). Please contact service-desk@cst.cam.ac.uk if you are relying on either Robotics-CL or govroam networks.

  • Monitoring

    Monitoring

We believe wifi is fully operational again, except for UniOfCam-Guest. We continue to work with UIS on this.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

As service starts to be restored, you may find that eduroam starts working before Internal-CL or wgb. If you are seeing our networks listed but are struggling to connect, try selecting eduroam.

  • Update
    UTC
    Update

Progress is being made towards a solution. We have implemented an emergency fix for two issues which unexpectedly caused UIS's new wifi setup to be incompatible with our existing departmental network configuration. We understand that UIS are still working on some other problems preventing wifi from functioning. We have no ETA at present for a resolution of those.

Wired ethernet connections are, as ever, available throughout the building upon request to service-desk@cst.cam.ac.uk.

    Statement from UIS:

The work scheduled to take place this morning to migrate access points (APs) on the West Cambridge site is overrunning. We had hoped to complete the work between 06:00 and 09:00 but have unfortunately not been able to complete the work in this timeframe. We are working to complete as soon as we can and will update this message when complete. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused by this delay.

We are aware of a loss of wifi in the William Gates Building. This is probably due to UIS's planned wifi infrastructure upgrades across the West Cambridge Site today; however we were not expecting a widespread and extended outage. We are awaiting further information from UIS.
